Based on our logo recreation exercise done in class, you must now go online and find a logo for another company of your choice that you would like to recreate in illustrator. Push yourself to make your recreation look as close to the original as possible.

Today we will use the Pen Tool in Adobe Illustrator to recreate the Trader Joe's logo.
Your job is to create a poster about the Blue Jay. You need to include all of the text and imagery in the folder in your final poster. You can add more imagery if you would like and you can edit the images provided however you see needed. Consider how the principles of design can help you send a visual message about the blue Jay. Consider proximity and how you should organize the content to guide your viewers eye.
How do you feel about your first experience in InDesign? What was your overall vision for this poster? What did you find most challenging about this assignment? How do you think you achieved good proximity? I think my first experience in InDesign went pretty well. At first it was a little hard to figure out the layout and how to do certain things, but by the end of the project I felt like I had mastered the basics of this program. In the making of this poster, I wanted it to be visually pleasing and to follow the four principles of design. For me, the most challenging thing about this assignment was finding a creative way to incorporate the text and still have the viewer's eye be drawn toward it. I think I achieved good proximity by grouping like things together. For example, I have the scientific name under the blue jay picture and under that I have the length, weight, and habitat of the blue jay.
Based off of our discussion in class about the principles of design, analyze two pieces of work from the portfolio website. Post the images you choose on your blog and write and reflect on how all four principles of design are utilized in the designs. This design by Niteesh Yadav uses the four principles of design. She utilizes contrast in the image by having the runners be brighter colors that stand out against the blue, by having the letters in the middle be orange which compliment the background color, and by having all of the design and writing surrounding the poster be a bright white which stands out against the darker blue. She uses the repetition of the sneaker graphic in the corner to emphasize the purpose of the poster, repetition of shapes to guide the viewer's eye in, and repetition of the blue and white colors to provide a sense of cohesion. In order to draw the viewer's eye in, she has aligned the runners to the center of the page and aligned the border to frame the central image. She utilized the principle of proximity when she grouped the runners and certain words together in order to increase the organization and the ease of comprehension of the design. This design by Nicole Orlean Baumgarten uses the four principles of design. She uses contrast in her design by having the subject of the photo be a more muted brown that has no sharp edges, allowing it to easily contrast with the bright geometric shapes she uses in the background. She uses repetition by repeating shapes in the background and repeating the white highlights found on the face in order to give her design a more consistent feeling. She has aligned the face to the middle of the page, thus ensuring that it is the center of the viewer's focus. Finally, she utilizes the principle of proximity by grouping all of the geometric shapes into the same pattern, thereby creating a more cohesive design.
Find an image of something that you think represents your "design taste". Why do you like this design? What attracted you to it initially? Fill both me and your classmates in on what you hope to learn this semester in class. I like book cover designs a lot, but I especially like this one because it integrates the text into the image to make the whole design more visually interesting. It is cohesive without being distracting, and the title still stands out despite the fact that it is part of the picture. This semester in graphic design I would like to learn more about using PhotoShop, Illustrator, and InDesign and improve on my ability to better create ideas and have the skills I need to execute them.
