Choose a city to make a poster of where there is something you can create a graphic of using only typography. Using the website provided, as well as conducting your own research, choose 2 fonts. One should be a font for titles and the other for the body text. Write a 10 sentence paragraph about the history of the font/fonts you choose and how they relate to the characteristics of the city. Make sure you have proper citation of your sources / a bibliography posted under your paragraph; you can also do this with footnotes. Create a blog post call "Type Project: Part 1". This post should include the paragraph and the name of your fonts. Two font I will use to create my graphic: Canal houses in Amsterdam I will base my graphic on: Ten Sentence Paragraph Amsterdam began as a small fishing village in the late thirteenth century, and these roots have influenced the character of the city ever since. This is particularly apparent in the canal houses that are found in the center of Amsterdam even today. Amsterdam is a city that is a blend of history and modern ideas, and I chose my two fonts to reflect this. The first font I chose was The Soul of Vodka to make up the title of my poster. The font is a serif font that is a variation of the old style serif font that was developed in the fifteenth and sixteenth century and is characterized by a low contrast in stroke weight and angled serifs. This font ties into the Golden Age of Amsterdam which occurred during the late 1500s to the late 1600s. During this time, a large portion of the cityscape developed including a large number of the canal houses that characterize the city. The font I chose for my body paragraph is a sans serif font called Avenir Next that contrasts with the title font. Avenir Next is a geometric sans serif font, which means that some of its letters, such as the ‘o’, are based off of perfect geometric forms. The use of the more modern sans-serif font reflects the progressive nature of the city, while the more traditional serif font reflects the history surrounding the character of the city. Choose a word from the list I provided you. Arrange the same word on each page in a typographical way that reiterates the concept of the actual word. (Remember the examples from the class presentation). You can ONLY USE THE WORD ONCE ON THE PAGE. You can NOT repeat letters. You can only use these fonts for your type (Times New Roman, Helvetica, Futura, Hoefler Text) and you are allowed to change the style attribute of the font you choose.
How does your layout help guide your viewers eye to read the content? What role to you graphics play in enhancing the overall message and content? How do you use Proximity? How do you use Repetition? How do you use Alignment? How do you use Contrast? I think my layout helps guide the viewer's eye to read the content by placing it directly under the title and left aligning the text to match the alignment of the title. It is also surrounded by the repetition of the orange color which guides the viewer's eye over the text as they move to the repeated color. I think the graphics enhance the overall message by providing a visual representation of the text and adding a lot more interest to the poster. I used proximity by grouping the title and the text together placing the World Vision logo under the text. I used repetition by repeating the orange color to make the poster look more cohesive and to keep the viewer's eye moving about the page. I used alignment by left aligning all the text to create a clean line that lined up with the graphic of the Syrian Refugees. I used contrast by placing the darker colored graphic of the Syrian Refugees over the bright orange background, and I also provided contrast by juxtaposing the orange and black throughout the poster.
Review the infographic below on how to use color in your design and then make a blog post on how you plant on effectively using color in your own poster. In my poster, I plan to use orange as it is in the World Vision Logo, which creates the sense of a call to action. I will also be using mostly black with touches of blue and red in my graphic of the women. This will signify the power and strength of these women, and the sense of urgency that goes along with the need to do something about the Syrian Refugee Crisis.
Create a Flyer about a current event/organization. Do some research on what is going on in the world today and choose something that you think is worth sharing a message about. Once you find this event, write a minimum 8 sentence paragraph summarizing this information. Make sure to create citations of this research. You must include these things in your final design: two graphics you have created in illustrator, one picture, eight sentences of text, and a source. Organization: World Vision This will be the first graphic I create. Photo of women Syrian refugees This will be the second graphic I create. Photo of fence This will be the picture I include in my poster; I am planning to erase the background. Eight sentence paragraph:
Since March 2011, conflict has devastated Syria. By the following year, Syria was embroiled in a civil war, with the Syrian military opposing a growing number of militant groups. Now it is internationally recognized as the largest refugee and displacement crisis of our time. The Syrian civil war has set back the national standard of living by decades — now that healthcare, schools, and water and sanitation systems have been damaged or destroyed. Conflict has torn apart the lives of Syrian children and families as government forces and militant groups fight to take and rule territory. Syrian children and families have witnessed unspeakable violence and bear the brunt of the conflict. Hundreds of thousands of people have died, 5.1 million Syrians have fled the country as refugees, and 6.3 million Syrians are displaced within the country.
