Choose a city to make a poster of where there is something you can create a graphic of using only typography. Using the website provided, as well as conducting your own research, choose 2 fonts. One should be a font for titles and the other for the body text. Write a 10 sentence paragraph about the history of the font/fonts you choose and how they relate to the characteristics of the city. Make sure you have proper citation of your sources / a bibliography posted under your paragraph; you can also do this with footnotes. Create a blog post call "Type Project: Part 1". This post should include the paragraph and the name of your fonts. Two font I will use to create my graphic: Canal houses in Amsterdam I will base my graphic on: Ten Sentence Paragraph Amsterdam began as a small fishing village in the late thirteenth century, and these roots have influenced the character of the city ever since. This is particularly apparent in the canal houses that are found in the center of Amsterdam even today. Amsterdam is a city that is a blend of history and modern ideas, and I chose my two fonts to reflect this. The first font I chose was The Soul of Vodka to make up the title of my poster. The font is a serif font that is a variation of the old style serif font that was developed in the fifteenth and sixteenth century and is characterized by a low contrast in stroke weight and angled serifs. This font ties into the Golden Age of Amsterdam which occurred during the late 1500s to the late 1600s. During this time, a large portion of the cityscape developed including a large number of the canal houses that characterize the city. The font I chose for my body paragraph is a sans serif font called Avenir Next that contrasts with the title font. Avenir Next is a geometric sans serif font, which means that some of its letters, such as the ‘o’, are based off of perfect geometric forms. The use of the more modern sans-serif font reflects the progressive nature of the city, while the more traditional serif font reflects the history surrounding the character of the city.
