For your Typography Project you will be using the research and writing you have done on a city and font to create a poster. Here are the requirements: Create a poster that is 11"X14" in InDesign. Your poster is meant to be about your city and how it relates to the font you choose. You can only use the name of your font, the name of your city and the 10 sentence paragraph you wrote. No images is your final poster. You MUST use incorporate your 10 sentence paragraph into you final poster and it MUST BE LEGIBLE. You can only use your 1 OR 2 fonts that you choose. You can repeat the name of your city and the name of your font more than once. And they are not required to be completely legible each time that you use them. You can organize your type however you would like on the page. You CAN use color in your poster. You CAN NOT use shapes. You CAN NOT add lines (unless you are using them for type on path and they have no stroke).

What do you think the most difficult part of this project was? Do you think in your future designs you will consider typography more seriously? Why or why not? What are you most proud of with your final poster? Is there anything you think is still unresolved? I think the most difficult part of this assignment was just the tediousness of making each letter an object and placing all of the different letters. The actual creation of the graphic wasn't too difficult, but it was really interesting figuring out how different letters could be placed together in order to create the shape or impression i wanted. I will definitely consider typography more in my future assignments. Font choice and the characteristics of the font influence the character of the poster and impact the overall impression the viewer gets. I think I'm most proud of how my graphic is more abstract but it still captures the essence of the canal houses in Amsterdam, how I used the repetition of the colors in the houses in the title, and of how I found a solution to wanting to use a blue box in the background (which did not fit into the requirements of the assignment) by changing the letter 'l' into an object that could be used in the background. The only thing I feel is still unresolved is some of the letters in my graphic have a slight outline on them. If I could figure out how to get rid of that outline, I feel like my graphic would be stronger.
Choose a city to make a poster of where there is something you can create a graphic of using only typography. Using the website provided, as well as conducting your own research, choose 2 fonts. One should be a font for titles and the other for the body text. Write a 10 sentence paragraph about the history of the font/fonts you choose and how they relate to the characteristics of the city. Make sure you have proper citation of your sources / a bibliography posted under your paragraph; you can also do this with footnotes. Create a blog post call "Type Project: Part 1". This post should include the paragraph and the name of your fonts. Two font I will use to create my graphic: Canal houses in Amsterdam I will base my graphic on: Ten Sentence Paragraph Amsterdam began as a small fishing village in the late thirteenth century, and these roots have influenced the character of the city ever since. This is particularly apparent in the canal houses that are found in the center of Amsterdam even today. Amsterdam is a city that is a blend of history and modern ideas, and I chose my two fonts to reflect this. The first font I chose was The Soul of Vodka to make up the title of my poster. The font is a serif font that is a variation of the old style serif font that was developed in the fifteenth and sixteenth century and is characterized by a low contrast in stroke weight and angled serifs. This font ties into the Golden Age of Amsterdam which occurred during the late 1500s to the late 1600s. During this time, a large portion of the cityscape developed including a large number of the canal houses that characterize the city. The font I chose for my body paragraph is a sans serif font called Avenir Next that contrasts with the title font. Avenir Next is a geometric sans serif font, which means that some of its letters, such as the ‘o’, are based off of perfect geometric forms. The use of the more modern sans-serif font reflects the progressive nature of the city, while the more traditional serif font reflects the history surrounding the character of the city. Flask, Dominic. “Type Classification.” Type Classification : Design Is History, N. p., Web. www.designishistory.com/1450/type-classification/. Choose a word from the list I provided you. Arrange the same word on each page in a typographical way that reiterates the concept of the actual word. (Remember the examples from the class presentation). You can ONLY USE THE WORD ONCE ON THE PAGE. You can NOT repeat letters. You can only use these fonts for your type (Times New Roman, Helvetica, Futura, Hoefler Text) and you are allowed to change the style attribute of the font you choose.
How does your layout help guide your viewers eye to read the content? What role to you graphics play in enhancing the overall message and content? How do you use Proximity? How do you use Repetition? How do you use Alignment? How do you use Contrast? I think my layout helps guide the viewer's eye to read the content by placing it directly under the title and left aligning the text to match the alignment of the title. It is also surrounded by the repetition of the orange color which guides the viewer's eye over the text as they move to the repeated color. I think the graphics enhance the overall message by providing a visual representation of the text and adding a lot more interest to the poster. I used proximity by grouping the title and the text together placing the World Vision logo under the text. I used repetition by repeating the orange color to make the poster look more cohesive and to keep the viewer's eye moving about the page. I used alignment by left aligning all the text to create a clean line that lined up with the graphic of the Syrian Refugees. I used contrast by placing the darker colored graphic of the Syrian Refugees over the bright orange background, and I also provided contrast by juxtaposing the orange and black throughout the poster.
Review the infographic below on how to use color in your design and then make a blog post on how you plant on effectively using color in your own poster. In my poster, I plan to use orange as it is in the World Vision Logo, which creates the sense of a call to action. I will also be using mostly black with touches of blue and red in my graphic of the women. This will signify the power and strength of these women, and the sense of urgency that goes along with the need to do something about the Syrian Refugee Crisis.
Create a Flyer about a current event/organization. Do some research on what is going on in the world today and choose something that you think is worth sharing a message about. Once you find this event, write a minimum 8 sentence paragraph summarizing this information. Make sure to create citations of this research. You must include these things in your final design: two graphics you have created in illustrator, one picture, eight sentences of text, and a source. Organization: World Vision This will be the first graphic I create. Photo of women Syrian refugees This will be the second graphic I create. Photo of fence This will be the picture I include in my poster; I am planning to erase the background. Eight sentence paragraph:
Since March 2011, conflict has devastated Syria. By the following year, Syria was embroiled in a civil war, with the Syrian military opposing a growing number of militant groups. Now it is internationally recognized as the largest refugee and displacement crisis of our time. The Syrian civil war has set back the national standard of living by decades — now that healthcare, schools, and water and sanitation systems have been damaged or destroyed. Conflict has torn apart the lives of Syrian children and families as government forces and militant groups fight to take and rule territory. Syrian children and families have witnessed unspeakable violence and bear the brunt of the conflict. Hundreds of thousands of people have died, 5.1 million Syrians have fled the country as refugees, and 6.3 million Syrians are displaced within the country. Half of those affected are children. worldvision.org Syrian refugee crisis: Facts, FAQs, and how to help Based on our logo recreation exercise done in class, you must now go online and find a logo for another company of your choice that you would like to recreate in illustrator. Push yourself to make your recreation look as close to the original as possible.
Today we will use the Pen Tool in Adobe Illustrator to recreate the Trader Joe's logo.
Your job is to create a poster about the Blue Jay. You need to include all of the text and imagery in the folder in your final poster. You can add more imagery if you would like and you can edit the images provided however you see needed. Consider how the principles of design can help you send a visual message about the blue Jay. Consider proximity and how you should organize the content to guide your viewers eye.
How do you feel about your first experience in InDesign? What was your overall vision for this poster? What did you find most challenging about this assignment? How do you think you achieved good proximity? I think my first experience in InDesign went pretty well. At first it was a little hard to figure out the layout and how to do certain things, but by the end of the project I felt like I had mastered the basics of this program. In the making of this poster, I wanted it to be visually pleasing and to follow the four principles of design. For me, the most challenging thing about this assignment was finding a creative way to incorporate the text and still have the viewer's eye be drawn toward it. I think I achieved good proximity by grouping like things together. For example, I have the scientific name under the blue jay picture and under that I have the length, weight, and habitat of the blue jay.
Based off of our discussion in class about the principles of design, analyze two pieces of work from the portfolio website. Post the images you choose on your blog and write and reflect on how all four principles of design are utilized in the designs. This design by Niteesh Yadav uses the four principles of design. She utilizes contrast in the image by having the runners be brighter colors that stand out against the blue, by having the letters in the middle be orange which compliment the background color, and by having all of the design and writing surrounding the poster be a bright white which stands out against the darker blue. She uses the repetition of the sneaker graphic in the corner to emphasize the purpose of the poster, repetition of shapes to guide the viewer's eye in, and repetition of the blue and white colors to provide a sense of cohesion. In order to draw the viewer's eye in, she has aligned the runners to the center of the page and aligned the border to frame the central image. She utilized the principle of proximity when she grouped the runners and certain words together in order to increase the organization and the ease of comprehension of the design. This design by Nicole Orlean Baumgarten uses the four principles of design. She uses contrast in her design by having the subject of the photo be a more muted brown that has no sharp edges, allowing it to easily contrast with the bright geometric shapes she uses in the background. She uses repetition by repeating shapes in the background and repeating the white highlights found on the face in order to give her design a more consistent feeling. She has aligned the face to the middle of the page, thus ensuring that it is the center of the viewer's focus. Finally, she utilizes the principle of proximity by grouping all of the geometric shapes into the same pattern, thereby creating a more cohesive design.
Find an image of something that you think represents your "design taste". Why do you like this design? What attracted you to it initially? Fill both me and your classmates in on what you hope to learn this semester in class. I like book cover designs a lot, but I especially like this one because it integrates the text into the image to make the whole design more visually interesting. It is cohesive without being distracting, and the title still stands out despite the fact that it is part of the picture. This semester in graphic design I would like to learn more about using PhotoShop, Illustrator, and InDesign and improve on my ability to better create ideas and have the skills I need to execute them.
